NFL Week 1 Australia Opener

San Francisco 49ers vs Los Angeles Rams | Melbourne Cricket Ground | Thursday, Sept. 10, 2026 | 8:35 p.m. ET | Netflix

History is being made tonight at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, as the NFL kicks off its inaugural regular-season game on Australian soil. The NFC West rivals, San Francisco and LA Rams, get the honor of christening the league’s newest international outpost. And while the setting is anything but ordinary, my models are about as clear as they’ve been all offseason: back the 49ers +3.5.

The Game Setup

The Rams come in as 3.5-point favorites, riding a wave of momentum from last season’s 12-5 record and a run to the NFC Championship. San Francisco also finished 12-5, making this a true clash of equals on paper. The Rams hold the head-to-head edge recently — winning four of the last five meetings — including a dominant 42-26 blowout in Week 10 last November. That said, the 49ers aren’t exactly strangers to winning this rivalry. San Francisco’s most recent victory over LA came on October 2nd, 2025, a 26-23 decision.

The over/under sits at 48.5, and the Rams’ over has hit in six straight games (averaging a staggering 63.2 points per contest combined). Worth noting if you’re eyeing a total play alongside the spread.

The Australia Factor

This is genuinely uncharted territory, and the travel and acclimation element shouldn’t be dismissed. The 49ers made a calculated decision to travel to Melbourne significantly earlier than their counterparts, spending real time adjusting to the time zone and conditions. The Rams, by contrast, arrived with far less runway before kickoff.

Both strategies come with risk — San Francisco may feel the fatigue of being away from home longer in the weeks ahead, but for tonight specifically, the early arrival looks like a meaningful edge. The Rams are essentially stepping off a trans-Pacific flight and going straight to a primetime game. That’s a lot to ask.

Betting Trends Worth Knowing

A couple of publicly available trends jump out for this spot:

  • Division underdogs since 2015 are 64% ATS. The 49ers fit this profile perfectly tonight.
  • Road/neutral underdogs of seven or fewer points are 65% ATS in Weeks 1 and 2 since 2019. Again, SF checks the box.

The counter-trend? San Francisco has failed to cover in three straight games as an underdog. The Rams, meanwhile, have covered three consecutive divisional games. Trends are trends — they push in different directions, and ultimately the models are how I resolve the conflict.

What the Models Say

This is where things get really interesting. I run four distinct handicapping models, and for tonight’s game, they are unanimous.

The Original Model and the New Mexico Model — both veterans of last season’s analysis on this site — point to San Francisco. It’s encouraging to see them aligned on the season opener.

Zed, which I introduced last season as an evolved variant of the New Mexico Model, also comes up San Francisco. Zed was designed to provide a standard scale scoring model. It compares the teams performance for the various stats to the league average and divides by the standard deviation. Much cleaner than New Mexico that uses a scale I decided based on statistical performance.

And then there’s AIP — the new model I built this offseason and have been quietly excited about. AIP was backtested against the last five full NFL seasons and came out performing 60% ATS or better across that sample. That’s not a vanity number; that’s a figure that, sustained over time, makes for a very profitable betting operation. AIP’s first official game call of the 2026 season? San Francisco 49ers +3.5.

The Play

San Francisco 49ers +3.5

The 49ers are a battle-tested, 12-win team from a season ago, taking on a division rival in a neutral-site game on the other side of the world — where they’ve been better prepared than the favorite. The historical underdog trends support them, the early Australia arrival gives them a situational edge, and every model in my arsenal is singing from the same sheet of music.

As always, bet responsibly, manage your bankroll, and enjoy what should be a historic Thursday night of football from Melbourne. Good luck to everyone taking tonight’s action.
